economic center and junction of water, road, and air transport.
With picturesque
scenery, Chongqing is a well-known cultural city with a history over 3000 years. It was the
capital of the ancient kingdom of Ba and
the wartime capital of
China during World War II. The city proper, built on hillside and surrounded by mountains, has been known as the mountain city and enjoys abundant
tourist resources and unique urban attractions. There are such historic sites as General Joseph
Stilwell’s residence, the remains of the Korean Temporary Government, the Capital of Nether World in Fengdu, the fishermen’s Castle in Hechuan, one of the three most famous
ancient battle-fields in
China. In addition, many scenic
spots with world-wide reputation are also located in this area, such as the Stone Carvings in Dazu, the Three Gorges, the Lesser Three
Gorges, and the Heavenly Pit and
